History []
Canada was, along with the rest of the Dominions (self-governed, ethnically white colonial nations of the British Empire, including Australia, New Zealand and South Africa), immediately at war with the Central Powers upon Britain declaring war in 1914. As the closest, Canada was the first Dominion to reach the battlefield, and quickly established a reputation for bravery and success. Using British equipment, and made up mostly of Canadians born in Britain, they nevertheless did their country proud, with historical records showing that many Germans feared fighting Canadians more than any other Entente soldier.
Canadians also fought in the British air forces such as the Royal Flying Corp and the Royal Naval Air Service. Some famous Canadian aviators include flying aces like Billy Bishop, and Roy Brown, who was believed to have shot down the Red Baron.
Trivia[]
The Canadian island of Newfoundland was a separate dominion at this time, and fought as Newfoundlanders rather than as Canadian.
